With only twelve competitors in the running, on this second round of the Fred Howe Winter’s

Cup, consistency was going to be the key. The course had defiantly seen drier days! With freshly

sanded greens, casual water with almost every stroke, and an only somewhat helpful prefered lie rule.
Scoring was extremely difficult, with only three members carding better than 31 stableford

points! Further. Any second round card of 27+ earns double championship points.
A three-way tie for this years cup had to be separated by count back. Equalling with a

combined score of 65 were Ken Grist(34), Tony Mifsud(34), and David Rees(29). Unfortunately for Tony,

and David who both receive double points, and winning handicap adjustments, the Cup for the 2011 Fred

Howe Cup will depart with ken Grist. Well done to all three, especially ken, who according to the

player attendance report is leading the field for most rounds in the last twelve months with 46!
consistency over two trying rounds can be particularly difficult, but our minor placers managed

two adequate cards to secure valuable double points. Rodger Clarke(29) was a grateful second, while

Trevor Jakson(27) third could probably be left rueing his chances seeing how close he finished!
The double points awarded for this round has brought ahead a new leader in the club

championship, with David Rees now taking the tiniest of leads over Targe Mifsud. While Targe maintains

a similarly small hold on the seniors title. With the season rapidly approaching an end, all placings

are starting to count. As proven, the more you play, the more you score.
Ball hole this week went to Tony Mifsud, while the pidgons over at Ed’s house will be in for a special treat.

The cloudless winters morning belied what competitors in this years Fred Howe Cup faced from the clubhouse. With a depleted field for the running of this years cup, only the hardened fronted, and a determined group of Ivanhoe members took on the cold, damp, sodden course. These players endured fast, bumpy greens, and many lost balls on the fairways!

The best to manage the conditions was David Rees(36), who was able to shoot par of a very respectable handicap. Equal second heading into the second round both shooting a handy 35pts, Rodger Clarke, and Trevor jackson.

The top three hold a plesent lead, 3pts clear of Richard Hall(32). Should turn into a tight finish, with many golfers in the hunt for the double points.

A couple noteworthy tid-bits passed on:          Kazim Akdag took on 17 with his driver, hitting the green. Putting truly, Kazim achieved his first Eagle! Well done Kazim, sure there are many more to come. While his playing partner Stefan Belevski(16) demonstrated just how a seven handicapper can have off day. We’ve all been there Stef.

The second round of the Fred Howe Cup can be won by many this Saturday, but for our President, he is lost for good. Yes. That time has arisen. Andrew, and his lovely wife to be Caroline are to be married this Saturday. On behalf of everyone, congratulations, enjoy, and stop smiling so much! All the best mate, we know this one didn’t get away!

     Played in this format of the game, par often proves difficult for Ivanhoe members. 9th July brought forth not only a great morning for golf, but a really positive scoring day for competitors. All championship points for this round were acclaimed to +1 or better!! Barring injuries, only two players submitted less than -3. Well played gentleman. Maybe Par isn’t that bad?                (preferred lies helps)…

The best round carded for the round belonged to Mehmet Akdag, with an incredible 76 off the stick earning +6! Apparently Mehmet’s good form was financially motivated, taking Andrew Petricola’s(69 gross!) coins. Andrew didn’t leave empty-handed with a +4, receiving second place championship points. That handy gopher Stefan belevski(70) continues his push for this years title, again playing to a handicap most of us will only dream of. Joining Stefan on +3, was Harry Boughen(86) whose back nine contained 5+’s! Good going guys, and good luck to you both in the race to December.

Mo Sabih(83) continues in his knack of handing in respectable cards, and obviously enjoying his golf. Slowly starting to gather momentum this season Jan Siemon(80) has now placed in his last three starts, and looks ominous to threaten the leaders in months to come.  Mo, and Jan share fourth place with +2.

Rd 1 of the Fred Howe Winter cup commences this weekend, so two stableford rounds, combined scores, and a big trophy to the winner. With Pepsi’s bucks day first week, and wedding the next, the field for this year’s cup is slightly reduced. Double Points, up for grabs, and a chance to be engraved into immortality.

With the disruption in regards to tee Marshall, all those unavailable for next following weeks will be sloted back into the rotation once returned.

On a tastier note, after the success of last years wine purchase, I am happy to announce that a pallet has been procured, and orders will be happily taken. Price per dozen is same as last year $125. The 2010 vintage McClaren vale shiraz has been bottled. Medal rounds bring out the best in the Ivanhoe members. Is it the prestige of the trophy, bragging rights, a chance to play in the ultimate tournament determining the champion of Champions. All of the above, plus 8 points, handicap deduction, and a free golf ball if you lose on countback… Such is the case in most Medal Matches.

July proved different…

Three competitors were able to shoot better nett scores than par!!!  Only two others beat 70!!!

With the recent improvements of our beloved track, combined with prefered lies(my favourite), and a gorgeous calm spring morning. Scoring should have been easy.

The Medal this month came down to a three-way tie between two real contenders, and a player charging his way up through the field. unfortunately, there is only one July Medal to present. The decision came down to a countback.

Congratulations to Benananan Akdag(84), Targe Mifsud(83), and Stefan Belevski(174)  all carding 66 nett. For Benananan, the round was that little bit sweeter, pipping his closet rivals to claim the Medal. Great golf gents, and well deserved of the championship points earned. Targe’s equal first has now taken him to the top of the table in both our tournaments this season, consistent golf can pay dividends, but a clean sweep seems a tall task.

Stephen O’Sullivan(80) continues his good form this year, simply, by turning up each week. His even par nett round was enough to secure outright second, and place him well in the hunt for the major prize. After being 10 over through six holes Jan Siemon’s chances of points seemed all but fantasy. Pleasant company, nice walk, and beautiful surrounds contributed to a supprising 69 nett, taking third.

Chris Priems is loveing the shorter holes securing the ball hole, while the man in the hoodie surprisingly took our cash. Top shot Mehmit Akdag.
